Critical incident support and CISM

When Critical Incidents Occur, the Response Matters.

Critical incidents can leave employees, teams, and organizational leaders navigating uncertainty, emotional distress, and operational challenges long after the immediate event has ended.

SK Counselling and Coaching provides Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), early psychological support, and organizational consultation following difficult or potentially traumatic workplace incidents.

Services are informed by trauma-informed principles, specialized crisis intervention training, and an understanding of the realities facing frontline professionals, teams, and workplace leadership.

The framework

What is Critical Incident Stress Management?

Critical Incident Stress Management is a structured, multicomponent approach to supporting individuals and groups before, during, and following critical incidents.

CISM is not psychotherapy or a replacement for ongoing mental health treatment.

Its purpose is to provide appropriate early support, education, stabilization, practical coping resources, and pathways to further care when needed.

Not every incident requires the same intervention. Support should be guided by the nature of the event, the individuals affected, timing, organizational circumstances, and identified needs.

Critical incident services

What support may look like

Depending on the circumstances, identified needs, and my scope of training, services may include:

Organizational consultation

Working with leadership to assess immediate concerns, identify employee support needs, and develop an appropriate post-incident response.

Psychological first aid

Practical, supportive intervention focused on immediate needs, safety, stabilization, coping, and connection to available resources.

Critical incident defusing

A brief, structured group intervention that may be appropriate in the early period following an incident for those directly affected.

Critical incident stress debriefing (CISD)

A structured group intervention considered only when appropriate within a broader CISM framework. Participation is voluntary, and the intervention is not presented as treatment or prevention of PTSD.

Individual crisis support

Brief, focused support for individuals experiencing distress or requiring assistance in identifying appropriate next steps.

Follow-up and referral

Helping organizations identify ongoing support needs and pathways to appropriate counselling, medical care, or other professional resources.

Experience

Experience Supporting Individuals and Organizations

My experience includes facilitating Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) interventions, including group defusings and debriefings following difficult workplace events.

Working directly with individuals and teams during these situations has given me an appreciation for both the immediate impact of a critical incident and the importance of thoughtful, appropriate support afterward.

CISM services, organizational consultation, and professional training are available by inquiry.

Leadership

Supporting leaders and organizations

Following a critical incident, leaders are often expected to support their teams while simultaneously managing operational demands, workplace communication, and their own responses.

My professional experience in counselling, occupational health and safety, disability management, organizational leadership, and crisis intervention brings an understanding of both the human and operational dimensions of workplace incidents.

Support is tailored to the circumstances rather than applying a single intervention to every situation.
